Union Carbide, WELLAND

One of the larger brownfields in Welland is the site of the former Union Carbide (UCAR) plant, built in 1914 as a branch plant of New York Union Carbide to manufacture calcium carbide used in producing acetylene gas. Two years later, Union Carbide bought Electro Metals, located just south of the original plant. Then Linde Air Products, a division of Union Carbide (Canada) Limited opened in 1925 to produce oxygen and acetylene. In 1929, Union Carbide acquired Acheson Graphite in Niagara Falls and moved it to Welland, where it started to make graphite electrodes.

Along Canal Bank Street facing the Welland Recreational Canal sits the 184.5-acre brownfield site. This upcoming project involves site remediation, restoration, and cleanup through segregating, managing, recycling and repurposing, and disposal of waste and contaminates.

Peters Environmental is proud and committed to helping communities, and other stakeholders in economic redevelopment to work together to assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields.

Lakeside Road Reconstruction, FORT ERIE

The Lakeside Road Reconstruction project area is located along Lakeside Road from Phillips Street to Dominion Road. This project consists of the replacement of the existing 150mm diameter cast iron watermain with approximately 1000m of new 150mm diameter PVC watermain. As identified in the 2017 Water Master Plan, the watermain was identified as a moderate risk asset for failure due to age, material and condition. Based on the recent CCTV inspection report, the existing 200mm AC sanitary sewer installed in 1973 was also identified as a moderate risk asset for poor structural condition. In addition, improvements will be made in the existing drainage system including the installation of a new storm sewer. Further, a full reconstruction of the road will be required.

  • Replacement of the existing 150 mm diameter cast iron watermain with 150 mm diameter PVC watermain, including replacement of all services up to/including curb stops,
  • Improvement to the stormwater drainage works, including new storm sewer for semi-urban road cross section,
